Note: While I am sure there have been much better films released this year, the thing is. I haven’t seen them. So the films added here are the ones that I have seen. So with that said, moving on.
10: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
A surprise for me at least. The first outing was fun. Here, taking cues from The Dark Knight, the action, tension, story scope, everything is escalated to a thrilling finale.
9: Paddington
Warm and fuzzy, a treat for both adults and children alike.
8: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Rise had me close to convinced that prequels reboots could work and Matt Reeves added to it. The digital apes steal the show no thanks to Andy Serkis’ Caesar and Toby Kebbel as Koba. Bring on part three.
7: The Raid 2
Bigger but not necessarily better than The Raid: Redemption. However, expertly shot and handled this will get your adrenaline pumping. If it doesn’t, check your pulse just in case.
6: Cold in July
A surprising little chiller. Michael C Hall has distanced himself from Dexter in this throwback to 80s John Carpenter films and more.
5: The Babadook
The most effective horror film of the year. Jennifer Kent shows and reminds us that you don’t need loud annoying bangs to make you scared, (yes Conjuring, Insidious, Annabelle I’m looking at you).
4: Edge of Tomorrow
A surprise turn from Cruise. Here he plays a coward who through a series of Groundhog Day resets, he becomes the hero. Emily Blunt co-stars as the kickass heroine that trains him. Sad that it wasn’t a big hit.
3: Guardians of the Galaxy
The finest Marvel movie to date. It’s cheesy, it’s funny made with a lot of love and dedication. Definitely the most fun I had watching a Marvel film after Iron Man.

2: Interstellar
A love letter to science nerds and science fiction alike. The effects are nothing short of amazing, the performances top notch and the ending in true Nolan fashion just mind boggling. Sound issues aside this was truly one of the greats of the year.
1: Snowpiercer
What’s that? This was released in 2013 you say? Well I don’t care. According to me this film hasn’t received the proper release it deserves which is a tragedy. It kept me on the edge of my seat and my jaw to the floor.
