Dating sure has changed a lot ( especially since the last time I had to do it). No more relying on drunkenly trying to catch the eye of someone in a nightclub, or try to impress them with your dance moves (told you it was a long time ago). Online dating and smartphone apps have made it much easier to meet people we’re a good match with.
It seems the dating playing field has changed again due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sure, you can still swipe through potential dates but during lockdown, but people have had to be a bit more creative and find other ways to build a relationship without being able to see each other.
Online dating platforms are going to need to find ways to adapt too. The world is coming out of lockdown but there’s no guarantee that we aren’t going to be in the same situation again in another six or twelve months, and one thing is for sure, it can get lonely with just your Netflix subscription for company. Features like native video chat, updates regarding social distancing measures in your area are all going to come in handy as we look to date safely.
Obviously we have love on our minds right now so we’ve put together some of the best and worst dates in movies to give you some ideas when you can finally get back out there.
The Truth About Cats And Dogs (1996)
In this great little romantic comedy, Janeane Garofolo plays Abby, a vet who gives advice to pet owners on a local radio station. When she helps charming British photographer Ben (Ben Chaplin) out with a dog on rollerskates situation, the two hit it off. However, he’s never seen her face and Abby pretends that she is actually her impossibly beautiful neighbour Noelle (Uma Thurman). So while Ben and Noelle go out on actual dates, Abby only gets to be herself when she’s talking to Ben on the phone.
They spend the night talking about anything and everything, connecting with each other, leaving Ben wondering why they don’t have this much chemistry when they are on actual dates. The call ends with some incredibly steamy phone sex, but this being a 90s rom-com, it’s mostly left to your imagination.
What a fantastic reminder that it’s a connection that matters, not physical appearance.
WALL-E (2008)
It’s the future and it’s not all free dating sites and apps. WALL-E is the last working trash robot on earth, so imagine how happy he is when Eve arrives. WALL-E takes her on boat rides and gives her a plant he’s been able to grow in the wreckage or earth. What’s not adorable about two cute robots out on a date?
Superman 1978
Who doesn’t want to be swept off their feet by a superhero? Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) meets Superman (Christopher Reed) on the roof of her apartment building in a floaty dress you could only get away with during the 70s.
They take a romantic trip flying around the city, past the Statue of Liberty before superman, ever the gentleman returns her to her roof and flies off to save the day.
Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)
Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone prove they have chemistry time and again (LaLa Land anyone?).
Jacob (Ryan Gosling) decides to tell Hannah (Emma Stone) exactly how he is going to seduce her. She’s sceptical, but it isn’t long before she’s falling for his charms.
